If you love the idea of parallel universes, you’ll love A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray or A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Marguerite Caine’s physicist parents are known for groundbreaking achievements and scientific revolutions. With personal possession of what looks like a necklace, but is in fact a key to multiple dimensions, Caine must hunt the one who tore her family apart. Leaping into alternate versions of herself, Caine experiences firsthand the everlasting possibility of change. In A Thousand Pieces of You, author Claudia Gray turns the theory of multiple universes existing parallel to one another into a reality.

“We’re so limited by our view of what we can actually see, that we forget that there might be things that we can’t see that may be beyond our imagine. What I like about reading is that not only does it let you go to other universes, but it gives you empathy towards others in those places,” Mindy Siefert (Library) said.

With stunning plot twists and intriguing characters such as Caine, the reader is able to exist on various levels throughout the text. If the plotline of A Thousand Pieces of You doesn’t peak personal interest, yet the idea of a fantasy world does, A Darker Shade of Magic is an alternate option with a similar amount of impact.

“I’ve always been interested in the idea of fantasy worlds and alternate universes. To think of a world I haven’t lived in yet and to experience such is why I love reading so much,” Zekhra Gafurova (12) said.

In A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, the world possesses not one London, but four: Red London, the center of balance, White London, where magic reigns supreme, Grey London, with a lack of power, and Black London, the land of the forbidden. Last of the Antari, magicians with the power to wield all elements, Kell travels amongst the universes as a personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London. With a secret interest in smuggling objects across the parallels for bid, Kell finds himself in possession of a dangerous enemy.

“Scientifically I don’t know enough to know how possible a parallel universe is, but I do know that time is not linear therefore the idea of something running parallel makes a lot of sense to me. I would recommend someone to read about the idea of parallel universes, because I think you should always expand to the edge of your brain even if it may be uncomfortable,” Jessica Winingham (Theater Department) said.

Whether a key to an alternate version of yourself or an inner power to different levels of magic, the theory of parallel universes is intriguing. With both novels, the audience is not only reading the plotline of alternate worlds, but experiencing the sensation themselves.
