One Direction Takes a Break, is This the End?

On July 23, 2010, the lives of five regular British singers were changed forever when they were grouped together on The X-Factor to form a boy band known as One Direction. In under six years the boys have managed to sell over 70 million records and perform in front of over 10 million fans.

However, six years of constant songwriting, traveling, and performing took a toll on the band this year as they announced they would be taking a long break from making and performing music as a group. The news of this hiatus quickly spread across the world, and many believe the band is doing more than just taking a little time off.

Jenna Huskey (11) has been a dedicated fan of One Direction since the very beginning of their formation, and has reason to believe the group of guys are splitting up because she stays up-to-date with the band’s news.

“I can see the band being over for good, since Niall Horan already has his own song and Liam recently signed with a record label,” Huskey said.

Huskey is just one of many who agree that the boy band will probably not be returning. Since this beloved group is beginning to fade into the background, let’s take a moment to reminisce on all their most important milestones and events.

Starting on Nov 18, 2011, One Direction released a total of five albums each November, all of which were incredibly successful and helped launch their fame even more.

Huskey is a fan of their most recent, and possibly their last, album released, called Made in the A.M.

“The album has amazing music and it was made after Zayn Malik left, so I could tell a voice was missing and I liked how different it was,” Huskey said.

This is not to say that their older albums were not unique and popular as well. Morgan Hertel (12) prefers their second album, Take Me Home, released back in 2012.

“There is nothing better than singing throwback jams,” Hertel said.

Aside from producing music, the band has endured many changes in the past few years. On March 25, 2015, the world was stunned when Zayn Malik, arguably the most talented and eye-catching one in the group, announced he was leaving the band. Fans everywhere were shaken, and for some, their world was turned upside-down.

“When I found out Zayn left the band I was at school eating lunch, and I almost cried. Somehow I was able to control myself,” Huskey said.

After this point, the band continued as a group of four, but nothing was ever the same.

Fast forward to the present, and One Direction has been on an extended hiatus that is planned to last over a year. One of the members, Louis Tomlinson, has a son now, and another member, Niall Horan, released a new song that is becoming quite popular.

“I love Niall’s new song, This Town. I listen to it all the time,” Huskey said.

Because of all these circumstances, it is near impossible for many to believe they will ever return.

“I think One Direction is definitely over for good,” Hertel said.
